Located in the province of Alicante, Albatera is a must visit if you’re into culture, gastronomy and nature. The area is also popular among photographers as the area is bursting with unique landscapes that are calling out to be captured on camera.
In the centre of Albatera, you’ll find Santiago Apóstol church, whose construction started in the 17th century and whose history is tightly linked to the town’s. If you’re lucky enough to join a guided tour, you’ll have a great time exploring the towers and basements, and gazing at the beautiful organ. If you have the time, you’ll also want to make sure you take a look around the lively food market.
Once you’ve finished wandering the most historic streets, head in the direction of Parque de Montaña Virgen del Rosario, a park and viewing point where you can happily spend the day in the great outdoors. If you’re keen to do some walking while you’re in the area, set aside some time to explore Ruta de la Sal de Albatera.
This trail will lead you to La Rambla Salada, a unique landscape defined by pools, aqueducts and salt. The underground water here is loaded with the mineral and when it surfaces it creates a truly unique sight: a riverbed encrusted with salt. The area is an ideal spot for birding and has countless geological formations that make the scenery well worth a visit.
In terms of Albatera’s festivities, the month of July is marked by events and activities connected to the Moors and Christians festival, which is dedicated to Santiago Apóstol. The town also has all sorts of traditions for Holy Week, such as eating mona, a pastry traditionally eaten at Easter, and digging into plato ligero, which is made from the leftover mona.
Truly is a Beautiful area.
